Eshott Hall History
 |
Records of a Hall at Eshott date back to 1310; the Estate is mentioned in historical documents regularly from this period. It is believed that Eshott Hall itself was first built in the1680s by prolific architect of the period, Robert Trollope.
The Hall was bought in the early 1800s by Emerson Bainbridge. He was a famous retailer who founded the world's first department store and had many other business interests including coal and shipping in the North East of England. Eshott Hall remained in that same family for six generations.
Over the last century, the Estate, like many others across the country, moved through challenging times including its military occupation during the war. By the mid 1990s , the dilution of shared ownership and resultant disinterest made it difficult to make decisive decisions in the longer term interest of the Estate. At the same time, the agricultural industry was in decline and the Estate was falling into serious disrepair.
In 1998, Eshott Hall and its stables were close to dilapidation and even featured in a book entitled 'The Lost Houses of Northumberland'. The Sanderson family spent 10 years rescuing the Hall and now Eshott Hall is arguably one of the county's most beautiful 17th century great houses.
The holiday cottages have been lovingly restored from the original stables, carefully combining old and new, with modern fittings in kitchen and bathrooms, and the highest quality contemporary fabrics and furnishings. Eshott's philosophy is 'Conserve, Restore, Sustain', a mind-set that helped win National Housebuilding awards for the development of the Hall, stables and the surrounding village.
Coming to Eshott, you will immediately notice that community is very important as you immerse yourself in a living, breathing, country village. Eshott Hall Estate was awarded a Business in the Community 'Big Tick' Award for Rural Action, which recognises companies who have created sustainable rural communities.
Nestled within idyllic countryside surrounded by ancient woodland close to Eshott Hall, our holiday cottages are part of the larger estate. The cottages enjoy tranquil surroundings with Lavender Court, a sheltered suntrap, to the south and a private lawned and woodland area to the north.
Views from the cottages stretch over rolling countryside and woodland which are a haven for a variety of wildlife. Visitors to the Estate share this beautiful landscape with a healthy population of protected red squirrels, birdlife, rare bats and plentiful but shy deer.
Eshott is a secluded and peaceful retreat that is ideal for family holidays in Northumberland.
